[update] The month of May has arrived!

The fifth month of the year has finally arrived. It will be a very busy and eventful month indeed. We will receive GAMSAT results in the middle of the month, and apply to medical school too.

With respect to the results release, by looking at historical release dates (and a standard definition of "mid-May"), it seems like Friday 13 May (ooh scary) is a good guess for an early release. However, given that this year's GAMSAT was late, Friday 20 May seems to be a good bet by looking at historical differences between results release and test dates. I do wish it comes sooner rather than later though.

As for university, there is also another midsemester test in one of my subjects after the break worth 20%. Furthermore, in another of my subjects, there are practicals totaling 20% of my overall mark to be completed! It will certainly be quite a busy and eventful month ahead.

  1. only just found this blog, its nice to read how everyone else is going with trying to get into med...

couldnt help but laugh at the nucleophilic addition-elimination name, brings back memories of gamsat study :(

anywho i was wondering, ive read quite a bit of your blog, is everyone in the melb bachelor of biomedicine trying to travel along the same route as you?

im studying at monash and while quite a few people wish to do medicine, maybe 50%, i would say only 20% actually put the effort in to have a chance.

is it sort of the same at melb? or does everyone have a GPA of 7 lol... at monash id say anyone with 6.5 is doing really well :P, i dont know anyone with a 7

  2. Hello Jacob,

I think more than 50% of people in unimelb biomed want to get into medicine (80% or 90% is sometimes given as a rough estimate, which I think is a bit overstated), but not everyone. Some want to get into dentistry, some bioengineering (master of engineering), and some research (honors) among other things.

That 20% figure you mention for biomed in Monash about people having a chance sounds similar to Monash's assertion a few years back that 20% of Monash biomeds seem to get into graduate entry medicine, according to alumini record.

I know a few people with 7 GPAs (I'm not one by the way), but only a few. It definitely isn't easy to score well in biomed. I'm not sure about percentages, but as for Monash biomed, there are also some at unimelb whose GPA/GAMSAT combo may not give them an interview.

  3. I went to Monash, and I noticed the same thing, most of the Biochem kids were just happy to get a credit...
