Hello everyone. I graduated with Doctor of Medicine at the University of Melbourne in 2015. I previously attained a Bachelor of Biomedicine at Melbourne in 2011. This blog documents some of my journey so far, starting from the year before I got into medicine. It also contains discussions of other issues with varying degrees of relevance to medicine or the selection process that I decide to bring up.

[update] GAMSAT results are released!
Anyway, that means I'll be applying to unis tonight with this year's score.
I hope all of you have received scores which are competitive enough.
In other news, I am still waiting for midsemester test results from last week's test. The test was OK.
Note: Results statement picture was added in later.

Great job again, you did super well, and I am so proud of you (even though I don't know you lol) I tell everyone about the miracle guy who gets the 100's! :D
ReplyDeleteHaha thanks, that is slightly amusing :P. Hopefully we can both get into the MD this year so I can meet you next year studying medicine at Melbourne.
ReplyDeleteEIGHTY OVERALL. EIGHTY. That is phenomenal. PHENOMENAL. I've never met anyone who scored above a 72. Congratulations on your well - deserved offer. :)
ReplyDeleteP.S Now that you've survived the whole admissions process, do you mind sharing some of your GAMSAT study tips/general wisdom?
You inspire me.
8-)
Thank you Cathy. 83 hehe (maybe I could have said the exact score rather than just "over 80" on my update). I knew quite a few people personally who scored above 72 who were in the same course as me (Biomedicine at Melbourne) as well as some others from online.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I tell people that they should watch Girls' Generation to help them with the GAMSAT because I did a considerable amount of that. But that might not help that much.
I did Biomedicine at Melbourne, and I did physics and chemistry in high school, so I learned the science that I would need for the GAMSAT in high school and in first year university.
Apart from that, I did some practice tests, and I learned some good writing techniques and did some more essay practice for my second attempt, since for my first attempt my section 2 score was 51.
Then again, I did find the GAMSAT easier than some others found it, and I didn't do as much study as some others seem to have. If you want to know what some others have done, some people (including people who have done well) have posted their experiences on the Paging Dr Forum: http://pagingdr.net/forum
I decided to take the September GAMSAT which was the earliest sitting I could take for scores to be viable for admission. !! I got 60, 75, 62 which rounds up to about 65/66. Nowhere as good as yours but I am (kind of) happy with it, for the time being. :)I don't think that score is competitive enough for entry but I'll keep on trying!!
DeleteP.S Thank you for your advice! Hahahaha I still read your blog as a source of inspiration.
Haha that's good to know that you find my blog inspiring. I guess how competitive it is depends on which uni you want to get into, what your GPA is, how your portfolio is (if the uni you wants uses that), and how good you can interview. In Australia, it would not be uncommon for people getting similar scores to get a place at med school if their GPA is high and the med school they apply to uses GPA as part of the ranking process instead of hurdle.
DeleteWow this is pretty impressive.
ReplyDeleteWhat would you recommend to people in regards to preparing for Sections I and II ? =)
Hello Elizabeth,
DeleteThere are a number of things you can do to prepare for section I and II.
-Read newspapers, certain magazines and books
-Do GAMSAT practice questions for section I. ACER ones are at a similar style to the GAMSAT, but there's not many of them. I reviewed some practice tests for PrepGenie, and they have been reasonably good, but they are considerably more difficult than the actual GAMSAT (although this is better than using easy practice tests and getting false confidence). See one of my top tabs if you want a discount coupon (http://additionelimination.blogspot.com.au/p/i-was-involved-in-reviewing-gamsat.html).
-Some people recommend using MCAT verbal reasoning practice books, but I haven't personally used them.
-If you're still at uni, consider doing some arts subjects requiring essay writing or analyzing texts to help section I or II as electives (although if you're really not good at it, your GPA might suffer a bit).
-Get a good essay structure and plan and practice essays.

Hi there
Deleteyour section 3 results is amazing.
do you remember what was your percentage of correct answers when you did S3 prepgenie tests?
and if you have to guess, what was your percentage of correct answers on S3 GAMSAT?
Thanks
Hello Arash,
DeleteWhen I did the prepgenie tests the percentage right was about 75%. I can't really estimate on the real GAMSAT, but on the ACER practice tests it was about 90%.
